Contents:

This set includes 8 sight word war gameboards covering all 52 of the Dolch 220 Primer words. A blank gameboard is also provided for students to write in their own word lists.

Setup:

Each gameboard is colorful and engaging and intended to be printed on cardstock, then laminated or used in a page protector. Students use a dry erase marker for game play, making your gameboards reusable many times over. Alternatively, the gameboards print nicely using the greyscale feature in your print settings.

How to Play:

This is a two-player game. One gameboard is required for each student. Students must keep their gameboards out of sight from their opponent (consider using a clipboard or standing manila folder as a partition.) Before the game starts, students add their “ships” to their own boards. This means they will write out their words (one letter per box) horizontally, vertically, or diagonally on their gameboard. Once both students have added all words to their boards the game begins.

The youngest player goes first by calling out a letter “A” and a number “7.” The opponent looks at their board location at A7. IF there is a letter in that square the opponent calls out, “HIT,” and if there is not a letter in that square it is a “MISS.” The first player then marks a HIT (X) or a MISS (O) on their own yellow “Opponent’s Board” to keep track of what they have already called for future turns. It is now the next player's turn.

The game continues in this fashion, with both players taking turns trying to HIT all of their opponent’s ships. Once all the letters in a word have been HIT, that ship is SUNK! First one to SINK all of their opponent’s ships is the WINNER![
